Second Round Saturday Turned into the Webb Simpson Show

PGA Tour Coverage Presented by the TriState PGA

Webb Simpson has had a really strong year coming into this weeks Dell Technologies Championship.   With seven top 10 finishes and a win at the Players Championship, he was right in the thick of things coming into the playoffs.  Simpson took that next step with a major move on Saturday as he would shoot a 63 to propel him into first place at the Dell Technologies Championship.

Simpson posted his best round ever at TPC Boston, and tied his lowest second round of his career.  Webb is trying to be the third player in history to be a two time Dell Championship Winner, the other two being Vijay Singh and Rory McIllroy.

Simpson’s 63 was tied for the best round of the day. The other 63 came from Tyrrell Hutton who also charged up the leaderboard as he would move into a tie for second with Justin Rose.

Tiger Woods would shoot a 5-under par bogey free round to move to 4-under for the tournament.

Jordan Spieth finds himself sitting at 6-under, within shouting distance but with large questions marks as he moves into the 3rd round.

During what has been one of his more disappointing seasons in his young career as a pro, his point of concern has been far and away his inconsistent putter.  Since turning Pro, his ability to make putts in pressure packed situations has driven his career.  This season has been much different, although in recent weeks we have seen him putt much better early on in tournaments.   It has been the 4th and final round where we have seen his struggles continue.  This weekend will be another opportunity for him to shake those woes and gain some confidence.

Phil Mickelson is stuck in neutral this week, finishing at 1+over and just making the cut.  Justin Thomas sits at 1-under and Patrick Reed at 2-under both find themselves in similar situations as Phil Mickelson.

Brooks Koepka and Rory McIllroy are tied with Tiger Woods at 4-under for the tournament.   Both Brooks and Rory could use a charge today to get into position for a chance to win on Sunday.
