The Standings were last updated at the start of Sunday at the WGC Bridgestone so the top three will likely only move slightly. But as you look at the entire list of the top 15, there are some questions that Jim Furyk and his team of Captains have in front of them.
Jordan Spieth is sitting at number 6 in the rankings but I think with the way he is trending there is a case to be made that he would be on the edge of not making it. With the collapse a couple weeks ago, the struggles this week, and the overall struggle with the putter this season, Jim may or may not want Jordan to make it.
I am sure he would like to see him rebound to go into the Cup trending up, but Jordan’s issues have been season long and now he is really trending the wrong direction. The next couple weeks are very important for his situation.
Some other players on the edge are Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau although I think Xander Schauffele could find himself on the team before Bryson. Especially after Bryson’s last two weeks of play and shenanigans.
I think if Tony Finau, who finished this week at 7-under, has a good showing at the PGA he will get his shot.
Tiger Woods was chosen prior to be a Captain, many analysts have him as a guaranteed Captains pick on this years team. I don’t see that right now, even as a Captains pick. Especially when you look at his weekend play. Tiger will help this team, but not as a player this time around.
Phil Mickelson has been very consistent throughout the season and is sitting at 10th at this point. Because of his fiery play with regards to his team play, he is a shoe in to make this years team.
