Kevin Kisner Leads Going into Second Round Of The Open Championship

Kevin Kisner took advantage of the morning Conditions and carded a 5-under opening round to lead The Open Championship at Carnoustie.   The players that went off in the afternoon struggled mightily to get to red numbers so when the script flips come Friday, the Leaderboard will likely do the same.

Kevin Kisner was not dazzling off the tee nor did he hit many greens.  What he did do very well was putt.  Kisner would finish his round with 22 putts which in most cases will support a leading round.   His round included four Birdies, an eagle and only one bogey.  The Eagle came on the historic 6th hole, nicknamed Hogan’s Alley.

Among the groups chasing, you will find three players from South Africa Including both Erik Van Rooyen and Xander Lombard both at 4-under followed by Brandon Stone at 3-under.

Tony Finau has played well in all of the Majors this season but has not won one.  He sits tied at 4-under as he took advantage of the length his driver provides his game.

Notables that are close include Danny Willet tied at 2-under along with Justin Thomas, John Rahm, Zach Johnson and Rory McIllroy.  Ricki Fowler, Henrik Stenson, and Matt Kuchar all in the red at 1-under and within shouting distance.

There are more than a handful of headliners that struggled on Thursday.  Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka both sit at 1+over and Phil Mickelson finished at 2+over.  Ian Poulter was also 2+over while Masters winner Patrick Reed turned in a 4+over round.

Don’t forget the number one player in the world, although after day one it would be fairly easy to.  Many wondered if the lack of playing would effect Dustin Johnson. At this point, that has been answered with his 4+over round.

One of the biggest stories of the week was Tiger Woods and his return to play at The Open Championship. Tiger has struggled in his opening rounds this year so his even par round was a step in the right direction although he was under par after nine holes.

As we look back to the Jean Van de Velde Melt down, he is there this week doing some on air coverage for French TV.
