As we flip the Calendar to July, we are now officially less than 3 months out from the start of the 2018 Ryder Cup. The idea of what the teams will look like are starting to take shape and the excitement is starting to ramp up.
Both Captains Jim Furyk and Thomas Bjorn have huge challenges ahead of them as all captains before them have had. More so I believe on Jim Furyk’s side of the globe as he is a first time Captain, and the US is the defending Ryder Cup Champions.
The Top 8 players will be chosen by points which will conclude on the 12th of August. The final four are Captains Picks and will come shortly after that point. As we look at the current points list for the US, here are the current Leaders.
- Brooks Koepka
- Dustin Johnson
- Patrick Reed (Captain America)
- Justin Thomas
- Bubba Watson
- Jordan Spieth
- Ricki Fowler
- Bryson DeChambeau
Just outside of that list, lurking and looking to make hay over the next 5 weeks are Webb Simpson, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Brian Harmon, Tony Finau, and Xander Schauffele.
The European Team led by Thomas Byorn is the host this year as the Ryder Cup will be decided in France on the Albatros Course at Le Golf National at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. It is only the second time the Ryder Cup will be played in the Continental Europe, the first of which took place in 1997 in Spain.
Byorn and his team of Vice Captains are looking to create a team that will take back the cup. As of right now, the European Team looks like this.
- Tyrrell Hatton
- Justin Rose
- Tommy Fleetwood
- Francesco Molinari
- Alex Norem
- John Rahm
- Thorbjorn Olesen
- Rory McIllroy
Just beyond these top 8 players you will find a bunch very close and working towards getting on the team. Those players include Mathew Fitzpatrick, Ross FIsher, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Matt Wallace, Henrik Stenson, Paul Dunne, Lucas BJERREGAARD, and Sergio Garcia.
When you dial in a bit further, the US Team takes the top 8 in points as automatic qualifiers. The European squad on the other hand does not. The top four are the only locks to be on the team.
US led by Jim Furyk and his Vice Captains are Davis Love III, Steve Stricker, and Tiger Woods who currently sits at 27th in Ryder Cup Points and could figure in as a Captains Pick to play. Stay Tuned!
The European Team led by Thomas Byorn, has Robert Karlsson, Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, and Lee Westwood as the Vice Captains.
