Bubba Watson comes into A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier with three wins, and a chance for a fourth. This will be his fifth appearance, he has made the cut the other four occasions with his best finish 11th. When asked about his expectations, he simply said, “My expectations are to win.”

With Watson, his game goes as his driver goes. If he is coming off the tee well, the confidence oozes into the other parts of his game. When he is coming off the tee erratically, all bets are off. When asked that question today, he all but confirmed that thought.
“For me personally, it all comes down to the tee shots. Gets me engaged in the golf course.”
When asked about his year to this point he said “There was a slow start to the year, I missed a couple putts. Getting a couple wins, and a couple trophies is always good.”
Bubba Watson won his last tournament at the Travelers, a week after missing the cut at the US Open. If you look at his season in general, those two weeks are a snap shot of his season as there have been some struggles in between those wins. More or less, he has experienced a feast or famine season.
- 17 total events
- 3 wins
- 5 total top tens – includes the wins
- Missed cut twice
- Best Finish not in top 10, was a tie for 28th in the Zurich
- Other tournaments, when not missing the cut he finished between 35-67th place
The Course, Resort, and Residency
Old White, the course he will be faced with this week has some length to it at nearly 7,300 yards. The bunkers are strategically placed to add to the degree of difficulty. Some sight lines have changed also. It was recently updated because of the flood damage from two years ago, and although updates were done in a manner to embrace the original architecture, there were some subtle changes.
Bubba Watson is a summer resident at the Greenbrier as he has joined several other players on tour by purchasing a home on the grounds. Both Webb Simpson and Phil Mickelson have homes at the sporting club. They have joinedGolf Legends Lee Trevino and Nick Faldo both of whom also have property at The Greenbrier.
Because of his residency, his knowledge of the course is likely more intimate than most, although it is often very difficult to win on a home course. Bubba referenced that in today’s presser and for some players it can provide added pressure.
Bubba Watson’s father was a Green Beret, so the fact that the new tournament name and theme is a tribute to our Military, makes this week even more special.
