U.S. Senior Open Preview

The Broadmoor Golf Club (East Course) is no stranger to major championships, and this week, it is the host of the U.S. Senior Open and the eighth USGA Event to be played at the Colorado course. Eduardo Romero won in 2008 by four strokes over Fred Funk.

Funk would get his revenge the following year as he would win in 2009.  Last year’s winner Kenny Perry also won in 2013.

Perry is looking to not only win back to back, but also claim his 3rd U.S. Senior Open.  The last person to repeat in the Open was Allen Doyle In 2005 and 06’.

The Broadmoor will host not only some of the best golfers in the world, but some of the hottest weather in the country there this week (at least that is the prediction). According to ACCUWeather.com The highs are expected to hit the upper 90’s until Saturday when the heat will break, at least a little.  The temps will drop to 85 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday with a chance of rain.

The heat and dry weather will make those greens more difficult then they are already.  Although most of these players are used to playing in the heat, it can be very taxing and can affect a players ability, more so in the latter stages of the round.

The Field:

There will be more than a handful of players with an opportunity to win this week.  The favorites are for sure in play, including Perry, Bernhard Langer, Fred Couples, Montgomerie, Davis Love III, Olin Browne, and Gene Sauers who won just 2 years ago.

One player that played well last week that we will not see this week is John Daly.   He pulled out with injury concerns after the USGA would not allow him to use a cart for his round. Daly cited Scott Verplank who was allowed to use a cart last year due to diabetes.

Then there is Hall of Fame Baseball Player John Smoltz who had to survive a playoff to earn his U.S. Senior Open spot.

Players with Pittsburgh Area Ties:

There are two players from Western Pennsylvania competing this week.  Rocco Mediate will be playing along with Bob Ford, who previously was the head golf pro for 37 years at Oakmont Country Club.

Bob Ford Coming out of the sand at Williams Country Club in Weirton WV.
