US Open Early Round 1 Scores and Notes

When the Morning groups Finished their 18 holes, Ian Poulter and American Scott Piercy were tied at 1-under for the lead. The morning session was all about survival. Shinnecock Hills played Angry On Thursday and was taking no prisoners.  We saw players all over the course playing from ungodly locations or hitting shots over and again from similar locations after failed attempts around greens. Some of the games best found themselves in around 10+ after day.  With the afternoon starting, this US Open has the look and feel that we have not seen in some time.  WELCOME BACK!

The USGA took some flack about the difficulty level of the previous handful of open locations.  Shinnicock Hills, the 2018 location ran directly to the iron tower with spray paint to defend their honor.  Wow What a morning we had.

Charles Howell, Charlie Hoffman, and Justin Rose find themselves at 1-under after round 1.   Patrick Reed and Zach Johnson were able to hold things under control to keep pace at 3+over.

Through all the carnage, there were many good shots and some good play that matched those shots.

And then there was some of this…

To say the course has some teeth today would be an understatement.  After round 1 here are a handful of notable scores.

  • Jordan Speith  +8
  • Phil Mickelson +7
  • Jason Day +9
  • Bubba Watson +7
  • Brooks Koepka +5
  • Rory McIllroy +10

That is just from the morning… so look for our final report after day 1.
