Day 1 of the TriState PGA’s EZGO Open at Williams Country Club is in the books. The course was in perfect shape and although the layout does not boast 21st century length at 6500 yards, the bunkers and hills make for a challenging round even for the Pros. Mike Frisina and John Abner are in the clubhouse with the lead at 2-under with a small group chasing them down just 1 stroke.
Edgewood Country Club’s Mike Frisina, scored well today and would finish the round with 5 birdies. John Aber of Allegheny Country Club finished would 4 birdies, but would bogey the final two holes of his round.
There is a group chasing the leaders, just a stroke behind and they include Mark Goetz, Andy Butler, and Jimmy Ellis.
The course was soft after all the rain and they were all among the players that were able to take advantage of the layout.
When you think about the best clubs in the Tri State Area, the first course that comes to most minds is Oakmont Country Club. Williams has that same kind of look and feel. Although the course is not nearly as long because of the small plot of land it resides on, Williams relies on perfectly placed bunkers and large greens, along with rolling fairways to give Golfers a stiff challenge. There is a real reason for the similarities to Oakmont.
Back in 1930, The Oakmont CC Greens Keeper Emil “Dutch” Loeffler was invited to come down and take a look at this piece of land that Weirton Steel owned on top of the hill in Weirton WV.
It was a Beautiful piece of farmland that overlooked the Ohio Valley. After reviewing the land, he found it to be a perfect location. Both he and John McGlynn were hired to design and build the club.
The name came from the President of Weirton Steel, JC Williams. He approved and had the course built, although it was not his original idea.
By 1937, the 18 hole club was opened for business. Weirton Steel owned and operated the club until 1982. The Members would take over the running of the facility and that would last until 2015 when James Markowitz would purchase the club and begin to restore and update the facilities.
Williams is once again back to being the Premier facility in the Ohio Valley.
