Fort Worth Invitational Preview: Presented by the TriState PGA

The Fort Worth Invitational Preview is Presented by The TriState PGA.

This weeks Fort Worth Invitational will be hosted at The Colonial Country Club of Fort Worth, an annual tournament host on the PGA Tour.  With the Memorial and  US Open in direct view, the field has substantially more weight this week.  Kevin Kisner is the reigning Champion and will be paired up with the 2016 winner Jordan Spieth along with Steve Stricker whom played well last week in his Champions Tour Event.

The course itself is the second longest consistent host of a PGA Tour event, second only to Augusta and the Masters.  Colonial has hosted 3 majors including a US Open in 1941, The Players Championship in 75’,  and a Womens US Open in 91’.

It’s a tight course, designed by John Bredemus of Texas and Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma in 1936.   It is a 7209 yard course, that features tight fairways and doglegs which allows the true shot makers opportunities to score.

This years event features 13 of the Worlds top 30 players of which all be among favorites this week.  But there are many that have a chance to compete this week and I include a couple in my picks for the week.

I look for Zach Johnson, who holds a 72 hole course record (259)here to play well this week.  He has been in around the leaderboard all season, and it would not surprise me to see him win this week.  Ryan Palmer is a member here and has 4 top 15 finishes so he is always a threat.  I also look for Ricki Fowler to go low this week and would not be surprised to see him win.

Of the more veteran players to tackle Colonial this week, look for both Stricker and Furyk to find their ways into the top 20 this week.

Here are this weeks picks from our Feature Golf Writer Zac Weiss.

1. Jason Dufner- This is around the time of year that Dufner comes into form and despite the infamous famous putt missed on the 72nd green Sunday, he tied for fifth at The PLAYERS Championship. Next week Dufner will defend his Memorial Tournament title and it is not out of the realm of possibility that he finds success here.

2. Emiliano Grillo- I do not know why I pick him so much but at least three top-40 finishes in his last four events make a case. Even his worst of those three places, he fired a 69 at The PLAYERS Championship. He has the promise to compete week in and week out and could show it again this week.

3. Chesson Hadley- Oh snap, look who has found success back on TOUR. Okay that was a terrible pun, but what is no joke is that Hadley has registered top-20 finishes in each of his last six starts. He opened his season with three top-five finishes in as many events and has been one of the more consistent golfers this season. His last start also came at The PLAYERS Championship and ended with a 67, good to secure a tie for 11th place which tied him with Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Adam Scott, Ian Poulter and Tiger Woods, all household names.

4. Xander Schauffele- Definitely worth taking a flier on after he tied for second at The PLAYERS Championship. His few tournaments prior are certainly nothing to write home about, but perhaps this momentum can go a long way towards being ready for the U.S. Open.

5. Adam Scott- Fractions of decimal points still leave Scott on the outside of the U.S. Open looking in, but this week provides a chance to leave little doubt. It is bizarre even the thought of Scott missing a U.S. Open but these past two results bode well for success again this week.

6. J.J. Spaun- Another one worth taking a flier on. No Jordan Spieth pick this week and for the foreseeable future until he starts making some putts on a somewhat consistent basis. Spaun is coming off four rounds in the 60’s at the AT&T Byron Nelson including a final round 63 which earned him a tie for third place. Much like Schauffele, the surrounding work is not pretty, but the timing of last week certainly was.
