GolfMonger Preview: TOUR Championship

We have finally arrived at East Lake Golf Club and the TOUR Championship.  The final event of the PGA TOUR season and the FedEx Cup Playoffs.  Someone is going to walk away with the grand prize of $10M on Sunday afternoon.  The big question is who will it be?  Points leader and presumed Player of the Year, Dustin Johnson?  How about world No.1 Jason Day?  Let’s not forget about the defending FedEx Cup Champ, Jordan Spieth.  This will be a fun weekend.

Although the East Lake has hosted the TOUR Championship for 16 years, the field is faced with a different golf course to play.  No they did not change the greens (that was done in 2008). No they didn’t add yardage or move tee boxes around (well ok, they did on a few holes).  But that is minor compared to the real change.  The good folks at East Lake and the PGA Tour decided to flip the nines.  Yep, the front nine is now the back nine and visa versa.

Now, instead of the championship ending on a par 3, it ends with a monster 600 yard par 5.  Can we say that we hope to see someone in the final group or so having a crack at eagle to win $10M?  Yes please!!

tour-championshipGolfMonger Picks:

  1.  Dustin Johnson – There is no way on God’s green earth that we are not putting the Player of the Year on the list.  Yes we are early calling that but is there any doubt?  DJ is coming off a convincing come from behind win at the BMW two weeks ago.  His 68.50 scoring average in his last 8 rounds at East Lake are enough to put him on the list alone.  Sunday could be a celebration of the best year of Johnson’s career.
  2. Jimmy Walker – The PGA champion has kept his putting form throughout the FedEx Cup Playoffs.  That will serve him well this week on the MiniVerde greens.  Walker also has the length off the tee to put himself in position all week to make birdies.  Besides, how fun would it be to see Walker and Johnson in the final pairing Sunday?  Can you say Ryder Cup partners???
  3. Jordan Spieth – The defending champ has quietly put himself just outside the guaranteed win scenarios at the 7th seed, but that doesn’t matter.  He could end the season on a win even if that means he does not win the $10M prize it would be ok.  We haven’t had that since 2009 when Phil Mickelson won but Tiger Woods won the FedEx Cup.

Wild Card Pick:

We have a few guys gunning for the last of Captain Davis Love III’s picks.  We think that it will come down to one of two people.  Daniel Berger and Ryan Moore have had fantastic seasons.  Berger will win the Rookie of the Year (another early call) and Ryan Moore has played as well as anyone not named Dustin Johnson as of late.  So both players are our picks.  They need to put on a show to earn the last spot on the Ryder Cup team.  The hot hand was what the last pick was saved for right???
