Vegas’ Sunday 64 Wins RBC Canadian Open

Jhonattan Vegas shot an impressive final round of 64 of Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open to earn his 2nd PGA TOUR victory.  And he had to nervously wait it out for quite a while.

The wait was long for Vegas.  He started the day 5 shots off the lead.  So his round was done quite some time before the leaders came into the final stretch of holes.  All he could do was watch the monitors and the leaderboard to see if his 12-under par total would hold up.

The list of players with a chance to at least tie Vegas was long indeed.  The young Spaniard Jon Rahm had a shot and came up short.  Martin Laird, Dustin Johnson, Ricky Barnes, Alex Cejka and Steve Wheatcroft all had chances and could not do it.

Finally, the 54-hole leader, Brandt Snedeker came to the 72nd hole needing an eagle to tie.  He had finished Saturday’s round with an eagle 3 on the 18th hole.  He was in the middle of the fairway with thoughts of a repeat in his mind.  It was not to be, as Snedeker missed the green, ending up in the front left bunker and could not hole out from there.

“Last week I had a six-shot lead going into the weekend and lost by three. I was five back starting today and won by one,” said Vegas. (AP)

Vegas earned his first PGA TOUR win back in 2011 at the Bob Hope Classic.  It was just his second PGA TOUR start.

Now, five years later, he earned $1,062,000 and a spot in the PGA Championship next week at Baltusrol for the win at Glen Abbey Golf Club.  This was a very big day for the 29-year old from Venezuela.

“That’s the fortunate breaks that sometimes you need to be a champion on the PGA TOUR,” Vegas said. “It’s a great feeling. Vegas said. You’ve just got to keep your head down and play hard.”(AP)

We want to brag on his win a little bit.  In case you missed it, Jhonattan Vegas was our Wild Card Pick coming into the RBC Candadian Open.  After his great play in Alabama last week at the Barbasol, we figured he could keep the hot streak going and put up some low numbers.  We were right!!

Congratulations to Jhonattan Vegas!  The 2016 RBC Canadian Open champion!!  See you in New Jersey at Baltusrol!
