The Masters: Friday Preview

By Chris Madden

Day one is in the books from Augusta National Golf Course. Yesterday we saw a record setting sextuple-bogey from Ernie Ells on hole 1; and the young gun, Jordan Spieth completely dominate. All together we got everything we could’ve wanted out of the day; the perfect storyline set up for the weekend. We have only seen four players win back to back Masters Green Jackets, but it looks like Jordan Spieth is picking up right where he left off. So looking into the crucial “cut day” that is Friday, what should we be watching for as these guys hit the tees?

Jordan Spieth (1st)

Thursday Scored: 66

Predicted Friday Score: 68

No surprise that he is atop the leaderboard after day 1. This kid completely dominated last year, and shows no sign of slowing down this year. Already playing the course like a seasoned veteran, Spieth came into the weekend with a lot of weight on his shoulders. His answer to the questions and doubts are being answered, in record setting ways. Expect to see another solid round from Jordan tomorrow, most likely maintaining or sharing the lead with someone.

Leaderboard Top-3:

Shane Lowry (T-2nd)

Thursday Score: 68

Predicted Friday Score: 67

A name most that may not sound too familiar, most likely will soon enough. Lowry took the course by storm yesterday showing that he is a serious threat to the “Road to a Green Jacket”. Shane put on a putting clinic yesterday, birdying 5 holes (2, 3, 4, 5, and 8) and only bogeying one (12). Continuing this streak would leave him into one of the top groups for the weekend and most likely sharing or taking the lead from Spieth. The real question is if he can continue to answer the call when the pressure is on.

Danny Lee (T-2nd)

Thursday Score: 68

Predicted Friday Score: 72

Lee showed a roller-coaster of play yesterday. Finishing the first round with 6 birdies (2, 5, 8, 10, 12, and 16) and 2 bogeys (3 and 7). If he was able to turn these bogeys into pars, he would be sitting in 1st place with Jordan Spieth, and my prediction for his Friday might be better. Shooting a 70 on Friday at the Masters is completely fine, the difficult thing to recover from is watching the guy ahead of you do even better every hole. I see Lee slowly falling away as we get to Saturday and Sunday. His career wouldn’t put him as a favorite to handle the pressures that Augusta can bring when it comes down to the last two days.
