GolfMonger Preview: BMW Championship

Conway Farms is the site of the 3rd leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the BMW Championship.  It comes after a week off…a much needed week off for some of the players in the field.  It is down to the Top 70 players looking to get to the Top 30 for next week at East Lake.

Jason Day sits in the No. 1 spot in the FedEx Cup Standings heading into this week.  Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Henrick Stenson and Bubba Watson round out the Top 5 right behind Day.  It is going to be a fun to see who can win the $10 Million prize.  There is still plenty of golf left in Chicago and Atlanta over the next two weeks.  These 5 gentlemen are sitting in the driver seat as we tee it up on Thursday.

Conway Farms last hosted the BMW in 2013 with Zach Johnson winning with a 268 (-16) on the par 70 track.  Obviously we feel that Zach has a great chance to win again this week.  The Open champion is in good form and will surely be in the mix come Sunday.

Jim Furyk shot 59 in the 2nd round of the BMW that year.  That being said he needs to have strong consideration for contending at Conway Farms.  He too rolls into Illinois in solid form and looking to win the FedEx Cup for a 2nd time.

With a no-cut 70 player field there are so many things that could happen and that makes prognosticating more difficult than normal.  We need to finish up the season on a high note over the next two weeks, so we are giving these picks a lot of thought.

GolfMonger Picks:

1.  Zach Johnson – As we stated earlier, the 2013 winner has been playing very solid golf as of late.  The Champion Golfer of the Year brings good memories to Conway Farms and we fully expect a near repeat performance from Zach.

2.  Jason Day – Following a much needed week away from the game, Day will certainly rebound back into his recent championship form.  After all he has won 3 of his last 5 starts.  Oh and he was T4 here in 2013.

3.  Brooks Koepka – Another golfer that admittedly was fatigued, should fair well after the week off.  Oh and he has a little something to prove.  There will be some extra motivation after being left off the President’s Cup team.  Most golf media folk thought that Jay Haas would pick Brooks with one of his two picks.  Guess not.

Wild Card Pick:

A no-cut week brings a wide array of possibilities to the table.  We are going a bit off the radar with this weeks pick.  Tony Finau has had a remarkable rookie season on the PGA Tour.  He has impressed the crowds with his booming drives and length around the course.  He has had five Top 10 finishes including a T10 at Whistling Straits.  Why not win a FedEx Cup Playoff event?  He sits in 41st position and needs yet another Top 5 finish (Top 4 to be exact) to get into the field at East Lake.  Good luck kid!!
