GolfMonger Preview: The Open Championship

the open

The Open Championship is at the Old Course at St. Andrews this week.  Jordan Spieth is looking to continue his winning ways in major championships this week.  Can it happen?

Of course it can.  Will it happen is a better question.  There are a lot of factors involved in who is going to win at St. Andrews.  We will break a few down quickly before we make our picks.

Course changes –  Updates to famous holes like Hell Bunker on the 14th hole and the Road Hole bunker on the 17th stand out the most.  Overall 10 holes had modifications since The Open was last contested there in 2010 and the yardage on the card now reads 7,297 yards.

Weather conditions – As always the weather plays a huge factor in The Open.  Cold and windy is the norm, but when the rains come in to play it makes it even a tougher task.  This is what the forecast is potentially bringing this weekend.

Course knowledge/navigation – Knowing The Old Course and understanding how to navigate around the massive fairways and huge double greens are what separate the winners from the pack.

All of these will play a major role this week at the 144th edition of The Open Championship.  The fun part will be seeing how Spieth and the rest of his competitors manage it and withstand it.

Golf Monger Picks:

1.  Jordan Spieth – You did not think we weren’t going to pick him did you?  We are not concerned with his lack of course experience.  This kid’s game is right where it needs to be to win.  His driver is the weak part of his game right now,  Well with wide fairways it isn’t a problem.  His putter is better than everyone’s right now.  That is huge at St. Andrews.

2. Dustin Johnson – A 3-putt away from potentially winning the US Open, we expect a bounce back from DJ.  He has historically played well in The Open and we have no reason to think he will not again this week.  This is the perfect stage for DJ to lose the term “best player not to win a major”.

3. Rickie Fowler – coming off a huge win at the Scottish Open, last years runner-up is primed to move into the winner’s circle again.  Oh by the way, the last American to win the Scottish Open was Phil Mickelson.  He then went on to win The Open.  We’re just saying….

Wild Card Pick:

We thought long and hard about this one.  We are going a little off the beaten path here and picking Francesco Molinari.  The Italian golfer has Top 15s in his last two Opens and has had a very strong season in 2015.  He has four Top 6 finishes in the last 2 1/2 months.  More than that it is a gut feeling.
