GolfMonger Preview: The Greenbriar Classic

greenbriar logoThe PGA Tour is at the Old White TPC at the Greenbriar Classic. The Greenbriar Resort in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia.  This is a great week for the players as they get to enjoy one of the oldest resorts in America on the weekend of the 4th of July.  It does not get any better than that.

Now we see that the buzz at the Greenbriar Resort is that Tiger Woods is back in the field.  Ho hum…make a cut kid and then we will talk about you here.

The Old White TPC never lets us down when it comes to dramatic finishes.  Both par 5s are on the back nine as well as a par 3 for the 18th hole.  No doubt that the winner will need to score well on all three holes come Sunday.  That is a fact.

GolfMonger Picks:

1. Bill Haas – Bill lost in a playoff in 2011 to Scott Stallings.  He has never missed a cut at The Greenbriar.  We expect nothing less than a front page finish this week.  His game is solid right now and he looks on the verge of another win.  This could be the week for Haas.

2. Webb Simpson – We get nervous every time we put Webb on this list.  Why?  Because he bombs out when we do.  Hard not to put a horse for the course on the list this week.  Three top 10s in four starts at Old White TPC.  We will take that any day.  This stat alone makes us feel better about taking Mr. Simpson.

3. Paul Casey – Coming off a disappointing playoff lost at the Travelers Championship to Bubba Watson, Casey’s game looks really sharp right now.  This is his debut at the Greenbriar Classic, but we think his game is well suited for the Old White TPC and we will see him in the mix on the weekend for sure.

Wild Card Pick:

At a venue like the Old White TPC it is tough to pick a wild card.  The field is so wide open it could be any number of players.  Since we have to pick one we will go with Chris Stroud.  He owns two Top 10s at The Greenbriar Classic.  He is also coming off a T10 at TPC River Highlands.  We will ride a hot hand that has had success in White Sulpher Springs before.  We may even feel better about this wild card than a top 3 pick.
