It took two extra holes, but Bubba Watson was able to finish what he started on Thursday, win the Travelers Championship for the 2nd time.
Bubba Watson birdied the second extra hole to beat Paul Casey in a playoff Sunday. This was not a position that it looked like the long hitting lefty was going to be in after running out to an (-8) 62 on Thursday.
“I proved to myself in ’10 that I could win under pressure in the playoff; I proved to myself that I could mess up 17 and still have a chance to win, and so I knew that if I just kept my head down and kept doing what I needed to do, I could still have a chance to win, and that’s what I did,” Watson said.“(AP)
The win is Watson’s 8th career win on the PGA Tour and second at TPC River Highlands (2010). It was yet another playoff win. Bubba is now 5-1 forhis career in playoffs. Talk about winning in dramatic fashion.
Most of the drama came in regulation. Watson eagled the par 5 13th hole to grab the lead. But then Casey finished with birdies on 14, 16 and 17. Add a bogey by Watson on the 17th hole and we had ourselves a playoff.
Both players made par on the first playoff hole. So they went back to the tee at the 18th hole and tried it again. This time we had a different story.
Paul Casey put his drive in a fairway bunker, then hid second shot found the greenside bunker. That was all the opening Bubba Watson needed.
Bubba hit the middle of the fairway and then stuck and wedge to 12 feet. That was all she wrote.
“There are always ifs and buts and could haves,” Casey said. “But the goal was to give myself a chance to win, and I did that.”(AP)
If he wasn’t already there, now we have to put Bubba in the conversation for winning at St. Andrews in a few weeks don’t we? Of course we do.
