Now that we have all had a chance to catch our breath from the US Open, we can now look ahead to this week’s Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. The trip to Connecticut trades the tough, grinding US Open venue for a much easier and shorter course.
At 6,841 yards, TPC River Highlands is a welcome site for anyone that played at the monster that was Chambers Bay. The 3rd easiest par 70 course in 2014 we can expect plenty of fireworks and very low scores from the front page of the leaderboard. This is going to be a fun week!
It might be an easier task for the players this week but we don’t think it is an easier task to pick who could win this week. At a track like this anyone in the field has a chance. And we mean anyone. There are some names we have our eye on the played very well at Chambers Bay. Brandt Snedeker, Billy Horschel and Sergio Garcia were all Top 25 finishers at our National Championship. Certainly those names have garnered some consideration.
1. Brandt Snedeker – Sneds had to wish he played better Friday and Saturday at Chambers Bay. His final round 68 was one of the better of the day and for a short while had him in the picture for victory. That being said his 8th place finish is his third straight Top 10. We like his chances to continue that streak if his putter stays warm.
2. Billy Horschel – Let’s hope that Billy has all the whining and complaining about the greens at Chambers Bay out of his system by the time he tees it up on Thursday. We love Billy Ho and his fire and passion on the course, but WOW, he was out of line with his antics on Sunday. TPC River Highlands should be a great venue for him to make birdies early and often and be a factor come Sunday.
3. Bubba Watson – Talk about a horse for the course. Bubba won in 2010 and has four other Top 10s to go along with the victory. A short par 70 track might be just what the doctor ordered for Bubba to show his stuff to the crowd in Cromwell and have some fun.
Wild Card Pick:
Tony Finau fills the Wild Card spot this week. We liked what we saw out of the big hitting Finau last week at the US Open. He is ranked 18th in birdies or better on tour this season. Combine that with a five tourney Top 20 streak and there is a recipe for success in our eyes. Plus we think it is time for another first time PGA Tour winner.
