Fabian Gomez shot a final round 66 (-4) to win the FedEx St Jude Classic by four strokes at (-13) for the week. It was his 1st PGA Tour win. The TPC Southwind and Memphis, Tennessee seem to agree with him.
“I slept well last night, had a nice barbecue at the hotel,” Gomez said through a translator. “Tried to keep playing the same way I played the last three days. And I tried to keep my mind blank and enjoy the round.”(AP)
Apparently the barbecue was the key. I lived in Memphis for 2 years and trust me…the BBQ is amazing there. He started the day tied at (-9) with Greg Owen. Owen shot even par 70 on Sunday and watched Gomez run away from him.
“He hit every fairway,” Owen said. “He played great. He deserved to win. I played great the first eight holes and then hit some rocky shots. Guys are so good, you can’t play average. I’ve got some work to do.”(PGATour.com)
Owen was not far off. Gomez hit 10-14 fairways on Sunday. Gomez also shot all four rounds in the 60s (66-68-67-66) and seemed to be in total control of his game all week long on a very difficult golf course at TPC Southwind.
The two players made the turn even at (-10) after trading the lead a couple times with bogeys and birdies. Gomez birdied the par-3 11th hole after sticking his tee ball to 8-feet. From there on in the FedEx St. Jude Classic title was his. He never looked back.
A birdie on the par-5 16th hole gave Gomez a three stroke lead and virtually assured him victory. But, the Argentinian was not done there. He calmly drained a 30-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to add and exclamation point on the week.
Gomez became just the fifth player from Argentina to win a PGA Tour event. He is the first since Angel Cabrera at the 2014 Greenbrier Classic. Roberto De Vicenzo, Jose Coceres and Andres Romero along with Angel Cabrera are the other Argentinian winners. It is a fine list to be on for sure.
“That list for me is an honor, and we share many, many weeks with Andres, Angel,” Gomez said Sunday through a translator. “I know that they are going to be happy for this situation right now.”(AP)
