The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial did not disappoint. Neither did Chris Kirk.
Kirk was not even a player being talked about this week in the list of probable winners. Not that he is not a strong player, he simply was not on anyone’s radar coming into the week. Hell, we didn’t even think about him as an option when we were going through our GolfMonger Picks.
Well, in our defense, we were not the only ones that did not think Chris Kirk had the goods to win a golf tournament this week. The first guy that didn’t think he was in a place to win was….Chris Kirk.
“Kind of surprised that I’m sitting here with y’all at the moment,” Kirk told the media after the round. “Every other time that I’ve either won or been in this position, I really felt great about pretty much all aspects of my game.”(AP)
“To be able to do it when I didn’t really feel like I quite had it … is a huge step for me.”(AP)
Kirk had himself a very fine week at Colonial Country Club. All four of his rounds were in the 60s, with 65 and 66 on the weekend. That is how you win golf tournaments. Even with weather issues and the 3rd round being finished on Sunday, Kirk was steady as she goes.
A very efficient 33-33 to with three straight pars on 16, 17 & 18 with a huge 6 foot par save on the 72nd hole to secure the win. That looks like a man in control of his game and emotions on the way to winning his 4th career PGA Tour event.
Not lost on the University of Georgia alum, is the fact that he is the only winner of the Ben Hogan Award to win at “Hogan’s Alley” as Colonial is affectionately called.
“He’s always been the standard and still is, and will be for a long time, I would imagine,” Kirk said of Hogan. “To now have even just a little bit of an association with him is very special.”(PGATour.com)
Now Kirk sits 14th in FedEx Cup standings and has put his name firmly into the conversation of contenders at Chambers Bay and the US Open in June. If you think he should not be in that conversation you are crazy. He has proven he can win on a big stage with a victory at The Deutche Bank Championship in the FedEx Playoffs last season.
Enjoy the win and get ready for us to keep looking to you to more Chris Kirk. We expect more good things from you before the summer ends.
