GolfMonger Preview: Crowne Plaza Invitational

The PGA Tour heads back to Texas this week for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club.  There is an exciting feel this year with newly crowned Masters champ, Jordan Spieth, coming home to Texas to play.

“Hogan’s Alley” is a popular stop and is always a source of excitement.  Just last year we were treated to a fantastic Sunday.  Adam Scott defeated Jason Dufner in a playoff to win at Colonial for the first time in his career.

It will be interesting to see what this week brings to the table.  The last 4-5 weeks have been filled with some pretty awesome golf in some way, shape or form.  Tight finishes, playoffs and historically dominant rounds have highlighted recent tournaments.  Can Colonial provide the same?

Even though this event traditionally has been won by veteran players that have seen the course several times, we may not be going there with our picks.  But then again, maybe we will.

GolfMonger Picks:

1.  Zach Johnson – As we said previously, it takes experience to win at Colonial.  Zach has 2 wins and is the tournaments all-time money winner.  Those two stats alone are enough to make we pick Mr. Johnson over a talented bunch of golfers.

2.  Jordan Spieth – The Crowne Plaza Invitational is in the same neck of the woods as Spieths hometown of Dallas.  Even coming off a missed cut at THE PLAYERS, we still like Spieth to put on a show for the hometown crowd that will surely propel him to great things this week.

3.  Ryan Palmer – Another local resident.  He finshed T5 last year and comes into the tournament in fairly good form.  Not only that but he is due for a win so we expect big things this weekend.

Wild Card Pick:

In a field the size of the Crowne Plaza Invitational, it is tough to narrow your options for a player in this slot.  We are choosing Patrick Rodgers.  This kid is playing for status on the PGA Tour.  He is coming off  a very impressive 2nd place finish at Quail Hollow.  Playing on a sponsors exemption, Rodgers earned his way into the field this week at Colonial.  Currently playing on the Tour where he has already won once this season (Colombia Championship presented by Claro).  Go get ’em kid!
