Rickie Wins THE PLAYERS, Silences Critics

Rickie Fowler came to the TPC Sawgrass with many doubters amongst his peers and walked away with THE PLAYERS trophy.  Figure that ought to change some peoples perspective right?

An anonymous poll was taken of PGA Tour players by Sports Illustrated.  This is nothing new, they have been doing anonymous polls in sports magazines for years.  But the timing of this poll is what is interesting.  Fowler along with Ian Poulter were tied at the top of the list with 24% of the vote as the most overrated players on tour.  Hmmm……

Let’s take that poll again now and see how it turns out!

Rickie Fowler made a charge never seen before at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday.  He was 5 shots off the lead on the back nine.  So far back that his mother and sister left for the airport so they would not miss their flight home.  Then Rickie turned it on.

After a fantastic par save on 12 from a fairway bunker, he birdied the 13th hole, and followed that with par on 14. From there Rickie went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to finish at 276 (-12) and time to sit in the clubhouse and wait.

His 3-wood from 243 yards away on the par-5 16th hole barely cleared the water and rolled to almost gimmie range for eagle. Follow that with birdies on the final two holes to complete probably the best finish in the history of THE PLAYERS.

“I was kind of looking at just getting a good finish,” Fowler said. “I was not exactly thinking I was going to win this thing, but you never know what’s going to happen with the closing holes here. Guys can move forward or backward pretty quickly.”(AP)

We think you got better than a good finish Rickie!  And that was just regulation.

Fowler ended up tied with Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner after 72 holes.  Kisner just missed a 15 foot birdie on the 72nd hole for the win.

THE PLAYERS have a 3-hole aggregate score playoff format.  The players played 16, 17 and 18 again.  Fowler and Kisner both birdied the par 3 17th hole to go along with pars on 16 and 18.  Garcia could only muster 3 pars and was eliminated.

Fowler and Kisner went back to the par 3 17th hole again.  This is where this dramatic and fantastic golf championship would end.

Kisner hit a tee shot that barely cleared the front sand trap and ended up near the fringe right of the hole 20 feet.  Fowler hit a slightly better shot.

Rickie stepped up and stuck his tee shot to 4 feet and made birdie for the 3rd time on Sunday at 17!  Game over.  Winner!

We are pretty sure this leaves Poulter alone on the top of that overrated list now.

Congratulations Rickie Fowler!  2015 champion of THE PLAYERS Championship.

Oh and by the way…your girlfriend is HOT!!!!!
