THE PLAYERS Championship is the best tournament of the year outside the four major championships. This is not up for debate or argument. It is a fact. Most golf fans consider it the 5th major.
TPC Sawgrass is one of the best venues for a golf tournament in the world. The 17th hole is one of the most famous holes in all of golf. So yeah…we think THE PLAYERS is a pretty important golf tourney. The bigger question is who will win? Let’s talk about that.
Of course we are all impressed with the way Rory McIlroy charged his way through the WGC Match Play last week at TPC Harding Park. The only question is will he be fatigued after so many holes in a short time period. The correct answer is no.
TPC Sawgrass is a demanding course that is suited for the shot makers in the field. A premium is put on the tee ball as well as iron play. Of course familiarity plays a part as well here. That is the direction we are leaning this week in our picks. Guys that have shown past success are high on our list.
1. Rory McIlroy – How do we not pick the OWGR No.1 player after his performance at Harding Park? He looks dialed in almost as good as he was last summer. That is scary for the rest of the field. A dialed in Rory is almost impossible to beat. He is driving the ball long and straight. Scary anywhere but is a huge benefit at TPC Sawgrass.
2. Jim Furyk – Playing as good as just about anyone right now, Furyk is an easy pick here. Add in the fact that he was runner-up last year to his current form and we feel this is a can’t miss pick. Just cross your fingers that he doesn’t hold the 54-hole lead. (we all know what happens next)
3. Sergio Garcia – Going with a great track record here. Sergio has probably had the most consistent success of any player at THE PLAYERS. Winner in 2008 and top 10 the last two years. He has not played great lately, but friendly confines might bring out his better form.
Wild Card Pick:
In a star-studded field it is tough to make a Wild Card pick in the lot but we will give it a shot here. Russell Henley is our guy this week. He has had an up and down year so far. He has the game to play well at TPC Sawgrass and we think it will show this week. He is on a list of young players on the verge of taking the next big step to stardom. A win or front page finish here would start Henley in that direction for sure.
