Pistol Pete shoots to the top in Shenzhen

Round Two Report

Peter Uihlein bettered Kiradech Aphibarnrat’s round of 69 by one stroke to move a shot clear on nine under par on a breezy second day at the Shenzhen International.

The American matched Aphibarnrat’s five birdies – with the last the last coming at the ninth, his final hole – but made just one bogey to the Thai’s two at Genzon Golf Club, in Shenzhen.

Uihlein had holed a tidy putt at the par four sixth hole for a gain which draw him level with previous clubhouse leader Aphibarnrat, whose monster birdie putt at the third was among the shots of the day.

Uihlein, 82nd in The Race to Dubai, was one under par for his first nine holes, and then took advantage of the prevailing wind on his back nine to pick up three more shots.

Uihlein’s compatriot Bubba Watson, meanwhile, finished day two on level par after struggling with the conditions in a round of 74.

Key quotes

Peter Uihlein: “It was tricky today, the wind was swirling quite a bit. I got the back nine out of the way pretty quickly. I played very solid. I felt like getting anything under par on the back nine was nice, and I played a pretty stress-free front nine, which is always good.

“I don’t really have too much going on in my head, I just do my own thing and stick to my own game plan. I don’t really change things very often. It worked the first couple days so I’ll see how it goes from here.”

Kiradech Aphibarnrat: “When I go out and play worldwide, I get a lot of experience and learn a lot of new things. I’ve now played with many top players, which helps me get better. I’ve adapted my game after watching them and playing with them.”
