GolfMonger Preview: The Masters

The Masters is finally here!  It is Masters Week on the PGA Tour as the year’s first major comes to Augusta National.  Arguably the best week of golf for the year is here and we are going to make our bold predictions as always.

The build up has been tremendous.  The hallowed ground at Augusta National is finally open to the public. The drive down Magnolia Lane as magnificent as ever as the practice rounds have started.  The Par 3 tournament underway as we write.  The players enjoy fun competition along with their families and friends.  Oh and nobody wants to win.  No winner of the Par 3 tourney has ever won the Masters in the same year.

The Green Jacket is the prize this week.  To be Masters Champion is an incredible achievement that all young golfers dream about.  This week we may see a young gun slide the jacket on for the first time.  Then again we very well could see Bubba defend and keep the title or Phil win for the 4th time.  Either way we are very sure the name at the top of the leaderboard will be a very familiar one to all golf fans.

GolfMonger Picks:

1.  Bubba Watson – We have to take the defending champ here.  Two wins at Augusta already to his name, Bubba’s game looks prime to win again.  With a repeat win he becomes the first repeat champ since Tiger Woods in 2001-02.  No reason not to think Bubba will win this week.  In fact we believe that he will win the Masters 4 or 5 times in his career.

2. Jimmy Walker – The FedEx Cup points leader is coming off a runaway win at the TPC San Antonio and looking as strong as ever.  He finished T8 last year in his only visit to Augusta.  He is 4th in par 5 scoring this year.  We all know how important it is to score on the par 5s in the Masters.  Jimmy will be in the front page this weekend with a chance to win.

3. Rory McIlroy – Looking to complete the career Grand Slam, Rory is as good a choice as any here.  We were torn as to who to pick so we went with the No. 1 player in the world.  It just did not seem right to not pick him in a major.  A win would be his 3rd major victory in a row.

Wild Card Pick:  Now we have talked about how the Masters usually goes chalk.  It is a top player that wins.  So how do you do a Wild Card?  We don’t know either.  Ryan Moore is our pick.  It is a 100% gut feeling that he will surprise most people and have a shot at winning the Masters come Sunday afternoon.
