GolfMonger Preview: Northern Trust Open

The Northern Trust Open is at famed Riviera Country Club this week. The field is loaded with players that are off to a strong start in 2015. This is going to be a fun weekend of golf.

Bubba Watson is one of those fellows…oh and he is the defending champ as well.  (spoiler alert)  This week we expect to see some fireworks from Bubba as he defends his title and tries to rebound from a not so great Sunday at TPC Scottsdale.  We can’t wait to see what he does.

The PGA Tour has been coming to LA and Riviera forever.  It is a favorite early season stop for a lot of guys.  Freddie Couples has played here literally 1Million times (we may be exaggerating a bit).  Will anyone be brave enough to pick him this week considering his love of Riviera?  Maybe.

We are on a three week winning streak!  We would like to thank Brooks Koepka, Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker for making us look very smart.  See we have been trying to tell you guys that we know what we are talking about!  Why don’t you listen to us?  Let’s see if we can get another winner this week.

GolfMonger Picks:

1. Jimmy Walker – We have to go with a guy that LOVES the West Coast Swing.  Oh and Riviera is his favorite course.  Pretty sure we HAVE to pick Jimmy here.  It is not possible for us not to.  He has started 2015 2nd, Win, T7 and T17.  Yeah we are picking him here.

2. Bubba Watson – He came from way back on the weekend last year to get his victory at Riviera.  Back to back 7-under rounds of 64 will get a win just about every time.  We bet he won’t have to come up with those heroics this time around to have a shot at winning.

3. Jordan Spieth – Ok.  He has to win something soon right?  He is the next big thing right?  That is what everyone (us included) have been saying for over a year now.  Well Jordan, now would be a good time to make us all look smart.  Winner at the limited field, Hero World Challenge in November, Spieth wrapped two T7s around a missed cut at Farmers Insurance Open.  It’s time young man.  Go get a win.

Wild Card Pick:  We have to admit that we have no idea where to go with this pick.  It is a total crap shoot for us.  We put 5 names in a hat and drew one (seriously) and we came up with Dustin Johnson.  He has two starts under his belt since his 6-month layoff.  He missed the cut at Torrey Pines and played great over the weekend at Pebble Beach to finish T4.  History in LA shows that DJ should be in our top 3 picks.  He has three Top 4 finishes in the NTO.  Yet he finds himself as a wild card.  Playing three weeks in a row after not playing competitively for 6-months?  Good luck DJ!!
